Scout Notes: NOTES:The famous Le Relais de Venise L’Entrecôte restaurants in Paris and London inspired Grass Fed, a new steak frites restaurant in Bucktown. Grass Fed’s partners liked the simplicity of the single- dish approach at L’Entrecote (since 1959, the iconic Parisian restaurant and its offshoots has only served salad and steaks, sans menu, and dessert) but also wanted to cater to Chicagoan’s different appetites. When you sit down at Grass Fed, you’re presented with a placemat menu detailing your three options: steak, fish, or chicken (each comes with salad, bread, and fries as well). All the beef is sourced from Wisconsin grass fed farms, natch, and there are seasonal starters like shaved Brussels sprouts and sides like curried cauliflower. Grass Fed started its steak dinner service in October and the restaurant has the bustling ambiance of a stylish place that has just opened. The space, with high ceilings, white walls, and an open kitchen, is situated across the street from Marc Jacobs on Damen. Behind the big circular bar in the front of the restaurant are large glass jars containing liquor infusions, which make up the restaurant’s three rotating specialty cocktails. Sandia Caliente is currently being mixed, made with jalapeno-infused tequila. Asked if Grass Fed’s cool but understated culinary aesthetic and his love of infusing spirits were things he picked up at culinary school, operating partner Josh Schonfeld laughs. “Put some macadamia nuts in rum?” he says. “You don’t need to go to culinary school to do that.” We doubt it’s that simple.
