Scout Notes: How many times have you ventured to yet another tapas restaurant, only to see the same bruschetta/sliders/antipasti time and time again? Approximately too many times, that's how many. Don't get me wrong—I'm not knocking a good cheese plate. (Sacrilege!) But every so often, one might thirst for something different. And that thirst can be slaked here at Blue Grotto. Inside this tucked-away restaurant and lounge hides both sushi and Asian tapas, all to be enjoyed in the restaurant's intimate lounge and cozy environs. Slip into the side lounge with a freshly concocted wolfberry martini (betcha don't see that every day) and settle right into the comfy couches, or claim a table in the dining room (the better to spread out all those plates of sushi you surely won't be able to resist ordering). You might be curious: what exactly is an Asian tapa? Well, it's most certainly not the fresh-from-the-freezer spring rolls you might see at other so-called fusion tapas joints. Here, Mama Mei, the matriarch of the Wu family, whips up her specialties in the kitchen, her creations including gyoza pots, crystal shrimp dumplings, and a tuna avocado stack that melts in your mouth (and has a nice little kick, thanks to wasabi guac salad). But trust us: you can't leave the place without trying some of Allen Wu's sushi rolls. (In case you haven't noticed, Blue Grotto is definitely a family affair.) Fresh nigiri, pure and simple basics, and complex specialties (see: the seven spices-marinated tuna "Sexy Roll") make up the offerings at the sushi bar, and you shouldn't let yourself leave without trying a few of each. Of course, we'd like to recommend trying one of each of those tapas, too, but you might surrender somewhere between the crab claw spring rolls and the five-spice braised filet mignon. Guess you'll just have to keep coming back... time and time again.
