Scout Notes: You know something's going right when your second restaurant location reaches its 20+ year anniversary. Big Nick's Pizza Joint, the epitome of the New York diner, is tucked comfortably into a corner on 71st and Columbus where it has remained since opening its doors in 1981. Nowhere in the world will you find a neighborhood joint quite like this (except maybe the original Big Nick's on Broadway & 77th): you walk in past cooks working a grill, hustling to make juicy burgers and steak sandwiches the way they have for the past two decades. Just beyond them, servers dish up giant pizza slices for the regulars at the counter. Have a seat, grab a menu, and take your pick from hundreds of the city's best diner classics, from stuffed baked potatoes to Greek salads. Hit up their best known classics, like the Big Nicks Combo Pizza, with chopped beef, onions, fresh garlic, mushrooms, and curry; or the Sumo Burger, sporting over a pound of 100% Angus beef. The cozy, ragtag room will make you smile every time, and the food will forever occupy your heart—it only takes one trip to Big Nick's to make you a loyal fan for life.
