Scout Notes: Few experiences are as heavenly as walking into a cafe and being overwhelmed with the scents of baking bread and brewing coffee all at once. (For me, at least, thanks to carbohydrates and caffeine being my favorite indulgences/vices). So be prepared: when you walk into Artisan Foods, you'll be hit with a bread-hankering that even the most devout Atkins dieter couldn't resist. Between the fresh bread, the mountain lodge interior, and the attention paid to every detail of the delicious food, you can be sure that this bakery and cafe is about as far from Starbucks as one could possibly get. There's fresh-brewed Batdorf coffee and hot beignets (breakfast of champions). There's an always-changing daily special that lets Chef Hoyt show off his creativity (when I visited, it was a miso-marinated pork sandwich). There's an interior that immediately whisks you away to a cozy lodge in the Catskills, minus the pricey airfare. And perhaps most importantly, there's a dedication to the quality and freshness of the ingredients in each and every dish. Chef Hoyt cites freshness as an ingredient in and of itself, one that can make or break a dish. In Artisan Foods' case, freshness definitely makes it. Especially when it comes to anything bread-related, because from ciabatta to warm baguettes, it's all made right here. It's just one of the things Artisan Foods does to keep the quality of the menu on lockdown, keeping it all under the watchful eye of a chef with a near-religious commitment to freshness. And now that I've found this place (and their beignets), I'm fully embracing my future as the Pillsbury dough boy. Turn into the gravel lot just south of the Woodstock and Canton intersection, and look for the cozy log cabin building straight ahead.
