The Issue: Needs of Refugees and Immigrant Families More than 6,700 refugees from 61 different countries resettled in Texas alone last year, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Once refugees arrive in the United States, building a sustainable life can be challenging. In addition to meeting basic survival needs such as attaining employment and housing, they must also adjust to an unfamiliar language and culture. Additionally, younger refugees must acclimate to a new school system.
