With this Local Deal, reserve an all-day white-water rafting trip on the Lower New River and spend two nights at a centrally located campsite. Description
The Destination Outdoor adventurers know you have to search far and wide to find true wilderness these days. When no municipal park will do, set out for the mountains of "Wild and Wonderful" West Virginia. Five hours west of Washington, DC—but only one hour south of Charleston—the New River Gorge National River covers more than 70,000 forested acres and 53 miles of whitewater rafting heaven. You won't find wilder, more consistant rapids anywhere in the eastern US. The Digs To call ACE Adventure Resort "remote" would be an understatement. Let's put it this way: Instead of an address, the resort provides latitude and longitude coordinates to help you find it on the map (here's a tip: check the website for directions, as GPS systems usually get it wrong). Less than a mile from the banks of the New River, ACE provides experienced guides to lead its rafting trips—but that's not all: these people have become top-notch wilderness cooks. The Diversions Bring your own tent, equipment, and supplies for two nights of camping at the resort. Make sure to get good rest on the first night, because in the morning, you're off to a full day of whitewater rafting on the Lower New with the help of an expert river guide. The day-long trip takes you over 20 class II to IV rapids, but leaves time in between for swimming in calm pools and horsing around in the water. Just when you think you've spent every last drop of adrenaline, you'll take to the shore for a delicious grilled lunch by the river. Don't dally too long, though—you've still got a whole afternoon of foamy spray left to enjoy.
