A&W began in 1919, when Roy W. Allen opened his first root beer stand in Lodi, California. Allen partnered with Frank Wright 1922, and the two chose the name A&W. The first drive-in restaurant was an A&W in Sacramento, California in 1923; The A&W drive-in franchise boomed through the 50s and 60s. In 1971, A&W Root Beer was first made available by the bottle outside of the stores. Today, with drive-ins out of fashion, most A&W locations are fast food restaurants with drive thrus.

A&W has 1,200 locations in 10 countries.

A&Ws Menu Items

A&W continues to keeps its root beer at the center of its menu, with participating locations making the old-fashioned, all-natural soft drink in-store. The root beer is sold as a beverage (along with other soft drinks), and with ice cream for a root beer float. A&W serves a variety of hamburgers, including their famous Original Bacon Cheeseburger, the first bacon cheeseburger to be served by a chain restaurant, and Coney Island hot dogs, as well as chicken strips, and a chicken sandwich. Sides include fried cheese curds, onion rings and french fries. In addition to root beer floats, A&W serves a variety of ice cream desserts, including cones and sundaes.
